	Critical thinkers on aesthetics, anthropology, art,
philosophy, and history who have had a pivotal impact on art
historical theory will provide the focus of this reading-intensive
seminar.  We will concentrate on original texts by Foucault, Merleau-
Ponty, Derrida, Hegel, Marx, Poggioli, Lacan, Lyotard, Eagleton,
Heidegger, Nietzsche, Benjamin, Irigary, and Danto, among others.
The approaches we will discuss will include:  Marxism, Feminism,
Stucturalism, Post-Structuralism, Modernism, Post-Modernism,
Deconstruction, Microhistory.  The goal is to understand the
contribution of major thinkers and the ability to apply their ideas
to the interpretation of artworks.

Weekly position papers and active participation will be the criteria
for evaluation, and admission to the seminar is by permission of the
instructor only.  Preference will be give to students with reading
knowledge of French and German. Enrollment is limited to 18, and
graduate students from disciplines other than art history are
welcome.  Seminar interviews will take place the week of October 9,
and a sign-up sheet will be on the door of Professor Facos, Fine
Arts Room 142.
