G363:	Deutsche Kulturgeschichte
Topic: German Cultural History 1500-1900

This course studies the cultural history of Germany since the
Reformation. We will begin with Luther and the religious conflicts
resulting from the Reformation, and will subsequently focus on the
question how German identity has formed and evolved throughout the
following centuries. It is the goal of the course to impart a
critical, complex, and historically informed perspective on the major
cultural and political developments of German history. To reach this
goal, we will discuss themes such as religion, art, literature, and
sports to understand the past. We will study a great variety of
artifacts from paintings to short texts and films. Lectures and
discussions will be held mainly in German.
