Gender Studies | Critical Issues in Gender Studies: Gender and the War on Terror
G498 | 25593 | Comella, L
Since 9-11, a staggering array of gendered discourses and images has
appeared in news media and popular culture. From 9-11 widows and
the representation of masculine heroes, to images of Muslim
terrorists, women warriors, and peace activist mothers, gender has
played a significant role in shaping the symbolic terrain on which
the war on terror is being waged. This course asks students to
consider what meanings these gendered narratives communicate about
war, terrorism, patriotism, citizenship, public trauma, and
collective memory in a post 9-11 world. We will use case studies,
autobiography, film representations, and examples from the popular
press to examine the link between gender politics and the war on
terror.
