This course will explore the phenomenon of fascism (and national
socialism) in Europe from its presumed origins in the late
nineteenth century through to its full-blown expressions in the
regimes of fascist Italy and nazi Germany. We shall also look at
fascist movements in the western democracies as well as fascist or
quasi-fascist regimes in eastern Europe. We’ll certainly also devote
a week to the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. Ideally we’ll
also look at post-war neo-fascist movements. In addition to
political and ideological issues, we’ll consider fascist aesthetics
(as expressed in painting, sculpture, architecture and film),
fascist social engineering and (of course) fascist racism.
