This course will trace the history of Latin America from
independence until the contemporary era. It will look at a wide
range of historical phenomena from military strongmen in the
nineteenth century to peasant revolutionaries in the twentieth. The
readings will be a mix of primary source material like newspaper
accounts, novels and cartoons, works of art and textbooks. A range
of countries will be covered from Mexico and Guatemala to Brazil and
Argentina. No prior coursework on Latin America required. The
format will involve a blend of lectures, films and discussion groups.
