ABOVE CLASS OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY
ABOVE CLASS COLL INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION
ABOVE CLASS OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY

The terrorizing of America did not begin on Sept. 11, 2001.
American history is replete with terrorist and insurgent
organizations both from within and from without. Examples include
the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups, groups on the
extreme right, groups on the extreme left, the witch hunts of A.
Mitchell Palmer and Joseph McCarthy, religious violence, the
Oklahoma City bombing, two attacks on the World Trade Center,
international hostage-taking, and counterterrorism, as well as the
nation and the future in a world of terrorism.

This is a seminar and will be run as a seminar, i.e. there will be
reading and student discussions based on the readings. A
substantial portion of the final grade will be based on students’
oral performance.

It is also an intensive writing course. Students must write at
least 7,500 words or 30 pages, not counting revisions. This means a
series of papers over the course of the semester, not just one long
paper, but there may be one longer paper, 8-10 pages in length. A
substantial part of the grade will be based on students’ writing.

The course will be limited to 20 students in order to enable
everyone to have an opportunity to contribute to the discussions and
to have meaningful feedback on the writing assignments.
