We will explore the experience of sickness and care giving in the
United States during the 19th century, with special attention to the
historical sources and problems that framed medical practice and
domestic healing. We will look at how physicians and others thought
about the “natural” occurrence of disease, as well as the moral and
personal drama of illness, especially as captured in personal
documents such as diaries, letters, and memoirs. Requirements:
discussion, critical thinking, reading (100 pages a week), short in-
class writings on first-hand historical sources, and a final paper.
