The Global Fund (supported by the UN, the Gates Foundation, and many
national governments) has identified these three diseases as the
ones most important to combat today and in the near future. This
course will explore the history of each of these diseases and
examine successes and failures in efforts to control them up to the
present. In addition we'll consider some issues about disease
control in the 21st century. Are these diseases truly the most
important ones to control? What means of control have been used so
far? How far has the Global Fund progressed in disease control?
What alternative approaches to controlling the major diseases of
childhood, youth, and early adulthood should be pursued?
This class satisfies the intensive writing requirement. Lectures,
class analysis and discussion of important problems and issues,
interesting reading and other material. Grades will be based on
seven papers, class discussion, and reports.
There are no prerequisites for this course. It is meant to appeal
to students interested in the topic who want to improve skills in
writing, speaking before small groups, and working with small groups
on common projects.
