An introduction to phonetics with emphasis on the principles of
speech production and on practical skills in discriminating and
transcribing sounds from various languages of the world. Topics to be
covered include vocal tract anatomy, phonation, aerodynamic
mechanisms, the International Phonetic Association (IPA)
transcription alphabet, prosody, basic acoustics, and how speech
sounds mediate speaker and hearer.
