Production, Perception, and Phonological Competence

Being able to use a language requires abilities both to produce and
to understand utterances encoded in the language. This seminar
examines the relationships between speaking, perception, and
knowledge of a language's phonology. A long and varied literature
on native speakers of a language indicates that production and
perception capabilities are closely attuned to one another, though
there are cases in which the two diverge. In addition, literature
on language acquisition is replete with examples in which the two
sets of capabilities differ. This seminar will examine such cases
and seek to determine what they can tell us about a phonological
system. Specific topics will be determined by student interests,
though we will discuss both first language and second language
cases. Students will be expected to develop (new or existing)
research programs and share in conducting the class sessions.
