“Topics in the Buddhist Tradition” is an advanced course on specific
themes and methodological issues in the study of Buddhism. The focus
for the current semester is on changing models of Buddhism in
medieval Japan. Issues to be explored in detail include past and
present visions of Buddhism in the Kamakura period, recent
scholarship on women and gender in medieval Japanese religion, and
the relationship between Buddhism and Shinto in premodern Japan.
The course is designed for advanced undergraduates who have had R250
or R350. Students who have not will be admitted only with the
permission of the instructor.
