ABOVE CLASS OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY

This course explores issues related to the interaction between
political power and social forces in comparative and international
perspectives. We will discuss how political institutions (such as
states, political parties, and international governing bodies like UN)
are shaped by the actions of different social groups (such as classes,
ethnic groups, NGOs), and vice versa. Specific themes addressed by the
course include electoral politics in Western democracies, nationalism
and ethnic conflicts, rise and fall of welfare state, politics of
immigration and citizenship, impact of globalization on nation-state,
state failure and terrorism in the developing world, among others.
Particular attention will be paid to linking theories with current
events in different parts of the world. Lectures will be aided by
documentary films and other multi-media materials.
