Sociology | Research Methods in Sociology
S370 | 13919 | Heacock
ABOVE CLASS OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY
Students are required to enroll in one lab session
As an empirical (social) science, sociology relies on data collection
and analysis in its production of knowledge regarding the social
world. Sociology is also unique compared to the other (social)
scientific disciplines in that it utilizes the widest range of methods
to collect and analyze data. In this course, we will study many of
these varying methods through readings, discussions, and actually
doing them. Thus, students should gain practical skills that will
enable them to be – methodologically at least – competent amateur
sociologists. To help understand how sociology is actually done, as
well as to increase knowledge of sociological research findings,
students will also read many published articles covering a wide
substantive range. Upon completion of the course, students should have
an understanding of how research is actually conducted, be able to
critique research based on the advantages and disadvantages of its
methods, and most importantly have basic skills in research design and
completion.
