S511 | 14182 | Vargas, S.
This course involves the study of the articulatory and acoustic
properties of speech and the use of the International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA) to transcribe American English pronunciation. The
course is divided into two parts. The first part will introduce
students to basic linguistic terms, and basic anatomy and physiology
related to speech production, followed by extensive work in broad
(phonemic) transcription and narrow (phonetic) transcription. The
second part of the course will focus on the basic physics of sound
and the study of the acoustic properties of speech. A special
laboratory session is included to help understand speech acoustics.
Special focus will be given to the articulatory behavior and acoustic
properties of disordered speech.
