This course will involve you in the study of the mass media as
social institutions--particularly how they shape our taste,
behavior, opinions, and understanding of the world we live in.
But we will also contemplate how other social forces (e.g.
economics, government, globalization) shape media operations.
I hope that you will leave this class with an understanding of the
complex relationship between media, people, and other societal
