This course will involve you in the study of the mass media as
social institutions--particularly how they shape our taste,
behavior, opinions, and understanding of the world we live in.
But we will also contemplate how other social forces (e.g.
economics, government, globalization) shape media operations.
I hope that you will leave this class with an understanding of the
complex relationship between media, people, and other societal
institutions.  Most important--the goal of this class is to make you
an even more a savvy media consumer and a well-informed

You will be required to read, write short papers, take exams, and
consume media!

The class meets from 4:00pm - 5:15pm on Tu & Th in TV 251

This course counts toward Social and Historical Studies distribution
requirements in the College of Arts and Sciences. It may, or may
