Criminal Justice-COAS | Policing the Mentally Ill
P300 | 12312 | McNair

Since the deinstitutionalization movement in the early 1950's,
police increasingly respond to calls involving persons in mental
health crisis. As a result, many mentally ill persons enter the
criminal justice system. This course examines the history of
deinstitutionalization and its impact on police, courts and
corrections. We will examine several innovative strategies
developed by criminal justice, community and mental health agencies
to address the increased criminalization of the mentally ill. The
advantages and disadvantages of such strategies will be considered
from the perspective of a judge, prosecutor, defense attorney,
police officer, and mentally ill offender.
