Collins Living Learning Center | Writing Speculative Fiction
L200 | 25204 | Byrn Neuenschwander
Many people grow up writing stories, but quit as they get older. This course
will offer an opportunity to pick it up again, or continue if you never stopped.
Our focus is “speculative fiction” - an umbrella term for the genres of science
fiction and fantasy, and the subset of horror that incorporates a supernatural
element. These genres have been closely related since their beginnings, and
share many characteristics in common. Students will read a non-fiction how-
to text and short stories illustrating each week's topic, but the focus will be on
writing and “workshopping” each other's stories. The intent is to develop
writing skills on three levels: genre fiction specifically, fiction writing more
broadly, and fundamental language skills useful in any kind of writing.
