Increasingly, forensic science is featured in the headlines of newspapers and lead stories on television shows. Even more impressive is its presence in today’s television series line-up. This course explores the science of crime scene investigation (CSI) through the examination of popular depictions of the science on television (e.g. CSI, Bones, Cold Case). The contribution of anthropological methods to criminal investigations is emphasized. Topics covered include fingerprint analysis, identification of human remains, analysis of blood and other biological evidence, investigation of footprints, toxicology methods, decomposition patterns, the history of forensics, and the Innocence Project, among others.
