L317 25321 ENGLISH POETRY OF THE EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

This course is designed to enable students to read and thereby to acquire an understanding and appreciation of the poetry of Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, Crashaw, Jonson, Herrick, and Marvell while at the same time introducing the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts contributing to the creation of their poetry. To that end, we will identify and practice strategies for reading and writing about early seventeenth century English poetry in the context of daily class discussions, informal and formal writing assignments, quizzes, and a comprehensive final exam. Attendance is required and daily participation expected.
