This lecture course will investigate the art of Italy, Spain, and
France during two centuries that are usually treated separately from
one another. The first half of the semester will treat Italy in the
sixteenth century, with a focus on Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael,
Michelangelo, and Titian. We will then turn to France and Spain in
this century, with lectures on the School of Fontainebleau and El
Greco. For the seventeenth century there will be equal emphasis on
Italy (Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi), France (Poussin, Claude),
and Spain (Velázquez, Zurbarán).
