GRADUATE SECTION ONLY

There have been many narratives of American art and many
struggles over its meaning.   In this course we will study,
interpret, and critique these narrative — from classical texts to
contemporary interventions — asking such questions as:  Who wrote
the history of American art, and how?  Who shaped it and for what
ideological ends?  How has American art history changed, and why?
What conversations and conflicts have marked recent developments?

	Counts for graduate credit in the areas of American/Modern,
Art Theory, and Historiography.

Course work: weekly readings and discussions, plus research/writing
project.
