P575 Theater in Portuguese

This course is an overview of more than 500 years of theater written
in Portuguese. We will discuss influential plays from Portugal,
Brazil, and Lusophone Africa, with an emphasis on the different
historical and cultural contexts and their correlations with various
dramaturgical techniques.
Readings include plays by Gil Vicente, Almeida Garrett, Martins
Pena, Nelson Rodrigues, and Pepetela. Readings and discussion in
Portuguese.
This course meets jointly with P475 and P498.
