HISP-S 411 SPAIN: The Cultural Context (3 credits) CULTURE
Prerequisite: S331 or equivalent

This course will focus on reading culture through the lens of
Spainís history of immigrations, conquests, and wars, which created
a series of distinct political and cultural paradigms during the
past 2,000 years. The course will be divided into two sections with
the last half of the course delving more deeply into twentieth- and
twenty-first-century issues that have impacted cultural production,
such as definitions of gender and family, the role of regionalism,
the advent of terrorism, and new immigrations. We will examine a
wide variety of cultural expressions and artifacts, ranging from
literature and film to architecture and historical documents, as the
bases of our analyses. Course requirements include project
presentations, compositions, a mid-term exam, and a final paper.
