The revolutions that brought down communism in 1989 were part of a
much-wider wave of change that swept the world from the mid-1980s
through the mid-1990s. We will examine this claim by looking at
revolutionary change on a global scale. Our main focus will be on
Eastern Europe and Russia, as well as events in East Asia, South
Africa, and Latin America. We will begin with discussion of
comparative social-science methodology, in particular how that
methodology relates to the study of social revolutions. Students
will investigate individual case comparisons through short research
projects.
