Introduction to the linguistic study of African languages; questions
of language distribution, genetic and typological classification,
and structural aspects of some individual languages. Important
topics include: Structural features of some individual languages
like Hausa, Akan (Twi), Luo, Efutu, Oku, Swahili, Sandawe/Hatsa,
Zulu, Maninka Malagasy (A Polynesian language spoken in Africa), and
others. Specific topics on structure include: Uncommon sounds, tone
and intonation, vowel harmony and consonant mutation, syllable
structure processes, tense and aspect, noun class and concord, word
order parameters, noun phrase, verb phrase, and various sentence
types. Other topics include the language situation in Africa (with
particular reference to Multilingualism); language typology, and
language distribution (The Language Families in Africa).
