This course surveys the range of diversity
that characterizes the use of English in the
state of Indiana. Especially surprising is the
degree of regional variation, but also the social
variation, which is greatest in urban areas. Due
consideration is given to the place of Hoosier
dialects within the broader patterns of American
English regional and social dialects, as well as
to the history of Indiana varieties of English.
