Sociology | Deviant Behavior & Social Control
S320 | 12898 | Scull

In this class, we will use a sociological lens to explore the
concept of deviance. Specifically, we will draw upon various
theoretical perspectives to understand why deviance exists in
society and why people deviate. We will also examine the concept of
social power and examine how different groups fight to gain control
over social definitions. We will then address the consequences
these definitions have in the form of norms, laws, and unofficial
social sanctions. We will then turn our attention to the ways in
which these definitions impact the individual, namely how people
construct and manage their identities.
