Speech and Hearing Sciences | Introduction to Voice
S415 | 27660 | Burnett, T.
The voice is amazingly complex and flexible, serving as a vehicle
for speech communication while at the same time revealing
information about the size, age, gender, health, & emotions of a
speaker. We will explore how the voice is generated and controlled
from infancy through adolescence, including how psychodynamic
factors such as personality, emotion, culture, & self-image affect
the sound of an individual's voice. Acoustical, anatomical &
biomechanical aspects of the vocal system will be reviewed, and
discussions of normal function will be augmented with descriptions
of common types of dysphonia and the ways to maintain a healthy
vocal system.
