L371 7007 CRITICAL PRACTICES
11:15a-12:30p TR (30 students) 3 cr. A&H.
PREREQUISITE: L202 with grade of C- or better. NOTE: The English
Department will strictly enforce this prerequisite. Students who
have not completed L202 with a grade of C- or better will have their
registration administratively cancelled.
This course serves as introduction to theories of reading and
interpretation. The course will explore the basic premises of New
Criticism, Psychoanalytic, Feminist, Deconstructive, New Historical,
Postcolonial and Media theories and give students practice in
applying these theories to a few select literary texts. The goal
here is to gain familiarity with the motives, terminology and
strategies of each type of criticism. I hope to have several
visitors throughout the semester. Students will write short response
papers throughout the semester, and two longer papers. There will be
a mid-term and a take-home final.
