TOPIC: "Tales Out of School: Popular Representations of Teaching and
Learning"

Through discussion and analysis of how fiction and film depict the
experiences of schooling, teaching and learning, we will work on
refining your academic writing practices. Our readings and film
viewings will focus on high school and college life, particularly
the student-mentor relationship. We will be especially concerned
with how the act of writing is represented, taught, learned, and
unlearned in each of these works. Writing assignments (short
response microthemes and several longer papers) will invite you to
contend with the issues raised by the texts we are discussing,
identify interesting problems, and make use of critical sources to
enlarge the conversation about popular representations of education
and the teaching and learning issues they raise. Works will include
Harris: Rewriting: How to Do Things With Texts; Margulies, Collected
Stories; Bennett, History Boys, and others.
