This course surveys major developments in European and American
sculpture from about 1750 to the present, with emphasis on the 20th
century. Particular attention will be given to placing sculptures in
their appropriate historical and cultural contexts. Understanding
materials and techniques is an important component of the course, as
is the analysis of style and content. For undergraduates, two quizzes
and a term project (either an exhibition proposal or a proposal for a
site-specific sculpture) are the main means of evaluation.

Graduate students will be expected to produce a research paper.
