feather work in this survey of the visual arts traditions of the South
Pacific islands of Australia, Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia.
Using style regions and individual island styles as a framework, the
course emphasizes the cultural, spiritual, and historical contexts of
objects ranging from weapons to masks, figures, and bark painting. The

Course requirements include readings, two non-cumulative exams, and a
visual analysis and research paper based on an object in the IU Art
Museum as well as a couple of smaller assignments.
