Germanic Languages | Conversational German
G375 | 15994 | Langjahr

Prerequisite: G330

Content: This course has two objectives

a) to provide a setting for intermediate students who wish to improve
their oral communication skills in German by familiarizing them with
strategies, vocabulary, topics and cultural background to do so. This
course is mostly meant for shy students, students who need to build
their vocabulary, or for those who have not had enough oral practice
in their previous German learning environments. A big focus will also
be on improving pronunciation.

b) To raise students’ awareness of subtle and not-so-subtle
differences in cultural norms, behaviors and attitudes, thus preparing
them for an extended stay in Germany.

Class activities: These activities include class discussions, pair
work, skits, nonverbal communication exercises, weekly pronunciation
practice in the language lab, and group presentations.

Materials: We will work with handouts, overheads, websites,
worksheets, and we will watch and discuss “Gegen die Wand” (2004)
