J400: P-HIST J300

At the close of the twentieth century, the United States claimed a
place at the pinnacle of world power, militarily, economically, and
culturally.  This course will examine the nation's journey to this
height, its military exploits, relations with other nations, and the
triumphs and tragedies along the way.  Our method of inquiry will
focus on research and writing.  Students will examine the material
stuff of which history is made, the papers of witnesses,
decisionmakers, and victims.  Students will learn how to initiate a
research project and bring it to completion in the form of a
polished essay.   If you lack confidence in your writing ability and
want to master this skill before you graduate, this is the course
for you.  Students will be evaluated on the basis of a 25-page
research essay and its component parts.
