The primary goal of this course is to introduce some of the
essential topics in phonological theory through problem-solving and
analysis. This course is heavily data-oriented, with the goal of
gaining experience in "doing phonology". You will learn to construct
phonological arguments and develop phonological analyses by working
with unfamiliar sound patterns from mostly unfamiliar languages. In
addition, you will gain specific knowledge of some of the
similarities and differences that exist in the sound systems of the
world's languages.
