This course is intended to introduce students to the contemporary
literatures of the Middle East and help their appreciation of
different cultures, as well as familiarize them with some of the
academic concepts and methods of literary analysis.
Drawing on examples of contemporary literature translated from
Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish, the course will explore the
major issues, which Middle Eastern writers address and sometimes
feel obliged to address.
The course looks at texts which deal with the following themes in
particular:
Influence of the West and the colonial experience
Place of the individual in society
Gender relations
War and peace
