Description. This seminar will survey a) cognitive, genetic and
neural mechanisms involved in mental illness, b) methods to
investigate mental disorders, including functional genomics, animal
models and brain imaging and c) psychopharmacological, cognitive,
and psychosocial interventions. A background in basic neuroscience
and cognitive psychology is recommended. Specific disorders covered
in detail will likely include obsessive compulsive disorder, autism,
schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder, memory disorders, and
affective disorders. Specific topics chosen will be influenced by
student interests. Grades will be based on class participation and
written assignments.
