This course is designed to introduce students to the fascinating world
of Ukrainian culture from Kyivan Rus to the present day. The course
will cover many facets of Ukrainian culture: history, folklore,
language, art, literature as well as modern pop-culture. Students will
learn how to read wax for fortune-telling, what visual poetry means,
what the most popular Ukrainian (and American) Christmas carol is and
many other interesting things.
All required texts are in English. In addition to the reading, which
will include a variety of sources there will be documentaries,
cartoons and music.
Students with advanced reading skills in Ukrainian may read additional
texts in Ukrainian.
