Where do the ideas of a Maya prophesy of the end of the world come
from?  Who believes in this and why?  If there are only 2 more years
to the end of the world why take this course?  Why go to school? If
the world is ending, why not get the “truth” here, for 3 credits! This
course brings together anthropological and historical approaches in
order to better understand our own place in the world today by
exploring our fantasies about the present, the realities of the
future, and the fiction of the past.  Participants should note that
this course is not a course on Maya archaeology or Mesoamerican
civilization.  This is an ethnography course that explores the 2012
phenomena, New Age spiritualism, and contemporary Maya cultures and
peoples.
