The course provides an introduction to the art and archaeology of
ancient Greece and Rome from prehistoric times to the 2nd century AD.
Lectures, readings and assignments will focus on the nature and
objectives of classical archaeology and its contribution to our
understanding of the past. Special attention will be given to the
formal development, function, and context of Greek and Roman art and
architecture, as well as to issues of trade and contact with other
civilizations in the ancient Mediterranean. We will also consider the
use of art and archaeology in politics and propaganda (both ancient
and modern), current problems and controversies in classical
archaeology, archaeological methods, and current issues of
archaeological ethics.
