This course gives students an overview of the linguistic
characteristics of Mandarin Chinese. It investigates Chinese
phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics from both
formal and functional perspectives. Topics regarding the relation
between the Chinese language, culture, and cognition will also be
discussed. Through a series of problem solving exercises and
projects on these topics, students are expected to develop
analytical skills pertinent to linguistic observations and
argumentation. The course requirements include active participation
in class discussion, tests, and a project. For the graduate section,
a term paper is additionally required.
