Above class open to undergraduates only

Societies such as the Maya of Central America, the Norse settlers of
Greenland, the Easter Islanders have fallen into unsustainable
practices that brought them to an end. Others have proved adaptable
and survived. We will explore a series of different societies and
their practices, using as a starting point the book by Jared
Diamond, "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed."

This is an intensive writing course that will require you to compose
short exercises and essays weekly on one of the societies discussed
in the book or on another society that you will identify with the
help of the instructor, and these exercises will be the basis for a
longer essay on the same topic toward the end of the course.
