From Frida Kahlo to the “bombshell” Jennifer López (J-Lo) we find
stereotypical representations of Latinas in popular culture and
advertising. “Commodifying Brownness” offers an interdisciplinary
examination of how racial, ethnic and gender differences are
negotiated through media a popular culture. By taking a cultural
approach to advertising, this course explores the politics of
representation, ethnic/racial authenticity, and cultural forms. Some
of the cultural forms examined in this course are artistic
representations (murals and low-rider culture) a various musical
forms such as Salsa, Reggaetón and Hip Hop (East/West Coast).
