From the onset of slavery, there have been movements to establish
human and civil rights  for the African American citizenry.  This
course focuses on the various ideologies and strategies informing the
African American struggle for equity in the U.S.  Readings focus on
thinkers and activists from the rebellion against slavery to the
contemporary debates regarding the concept of “post racial,”
institutional racism, and reparations.  The readings provide a survey
of African American thinkers and activists associated with a broad
range of strategies and movements.
