Is the family in decline? Are family values dead? Why is it
impossible to attend a wedding without someone mentioning divorce
sometimes even during the ceremony? In this course, we will learn
some of what sociological research has found about the family, with
a particular interest in our families shape our life chances, the
political debates surrounding family and marriage, and the ways
family structure and formation vary with historical and national
context. Instead of relying on a textbook and lectures, this class
will read a series of sociological books and studies, supplemented
by weekly written reflections and a significant amount of work in
the classroom.
