Race and ethnicity continue to be important determinants of
individuals’ life chances in the United States. This course will
examine current theories of racial and ethnic stratification that
attempt to explain continuity and change in American race and ethnic
relations. We will examine the processes through which individuals
form racial identities, how different individuals experience racial
identities, and the consequences racial identities and statuses have
for individuals’ life chances.
