TOPIC: Evolutionary Methods in Media Research
Evolutionary methods are becoming universal across the social
sciences while viral media technologies represent a new frontier in
media creation. This course helps students interested in media
effects, law, policy, and production become practitioners of
evolutionary methods, capable of using them in their own research
and creative activity.
Students will engage with three bodies of work. First they will read
conceptual pieces on evolutionary theory from psychology, biology,
and the social sciences. Second, they will develop simple
mathematical models of evolutionary processes. Third, they will
develop empirical tests of evolutionary theories.
