Twentieth Century America: This course is a seminar. It will
discuss several major themes regarding American history in the
twentieth century and require students to develop and write a
research paper. Significant attention will be paid to issues such as
National Identity, Mass Culture, Human Rights, Memory, Race, Gender,
Conservatism and Liberalism. Key books will include Elizabeth
Borgwardt, A New Deal for the World, Margot Canaday, The Straight
State: Sexuality and Citizenship, Michael Denning, the Cultural
Front, Thomas Sugrue, Sweet Land of Liberty and many others.
