C505: Readings in Chinese Syntax and Semantics
This course surveys issues in Chinese syntax and semantics. We will
work through chapters in Li and Thompsonfs (1981) Mandarin Chinese:
A Functional Reference Grammar, paying special attention to the
typological properties of Chinese, word structure, noun phrases,
sentence types, verbs and aspect (le, zhe, guo), sentence-final
particles, dative and locative constructions, the ba construction,
the bei construction, the serial verb construction, relative clauses
and nominalization. Additional readings (including more recent
journal articles) on these topics will be provided to supplement the
Textbook: Li and Thompson. 1981. Mandarin Chinese: A Functional
Reference Grammar (¿êê@). University of California Press.
Additional readings will be provided at Oncourse.
