E505 Open to Graduates only.
This semester the course will be a broad cultural survey of Japanese
history looking at educational developments over time. The pre-
modern period will be briefly surveyed and the concentration will be
on issues and problems from the seventeenth century to the present.
Great attention will be paid to the educational transformations that
took place during the early Meiji years, during the Allied
Occupation, and the period of educational reform during the 1980s.
Students will be asked to write brief response papers based on
readings during the semester. There will be mid-term and final
examinations as well as occasional quizzes. Meets with E354 on this
topic.
